Flavour by the sea
Captain Digby
Just about 200 m away, CaptainDigby is one of the oldest and most popular pubs in Thanet. Perched on the cliffs, it offers fantastic views over Kingsgate Bay, perfect for a pint or a meal after a seaside walk. The building was constructed between 1763 and 1768 as a “Bede House” by Lord Holland to host guests. The name “Captain Digby” comes from Robert Digby, a nephew of Lord Holland and a naval officer. When it was rebuilt around 1816, much of the original structure was preserved, keeping its historic charm. Historical anecdotes, such as leaving money for annual toasts at Captain Digby or wine for expectant mothers, reflect its rich past, even though these traditions are no longer observed today.
